American Ultimate Academy Participates in DC's National Girls and Women in Sports Day Expo
March 7, 2017
The DC National Girls and Women in Sports Day Expo was held on Saturday, February 11 at the Deanwood Recreation Center in Washington, DC. Co-hosted by the Washington DC Department of Recreation and the DC Sporting Athletic Association, the event featured 30 different sports and youth organizations from all over the district.
American Ultimate Academy was represented to showcase the sport of Ultimate Frisbee. Five of the top women’s ultimate Frisbee players across DC participated, sharing their knowledge and passion for the sport with more than 20 participants. Following a throwing clinic, groups of 4 were paired with coaches in a contest to see which team could pass the disc around the fastest. After three rounds of competition, AUA showcased another aspect of ultimate’s popularity: high intensity fitness. Players zigzagged in and out of cones, quickly cutting, sprinting, and jumping to catch long passes thrown by coaches. Speed, agility, and hand eye coordination, hallmarks of Ultimate Frisbee, were on display. A scrimmage followed, with team Pink defeating team Blue 2-1.
The expo concluded with DC Mayor Muriel Bowser addressing the crowd on what it really means to “play like a girl.” Her inspiring words ended a fun filled day of Ultimate Frisbee.
