Who We Are

American Ultimate Academy (AUA) provides comprehensive training for Ultimate. Founded in 2017, AUA immediately partnered with Washington DC Parks and Recreation & Montgomery County Recreation to run youth Ultimate programs for their residents. In 2018, AUA launched its inaugural overnight Summer Camp, which featured 35 campers from 7 different states up and down the East Coast. Alongside our campers were College, Club and World Championship caliber players & coaches. Full-time coaches included Jesse Shofner & Jonathan Nethercutt, while guest coaches came in throughout the week. Local stars Nicky Spiva & Jenny Fey, as well as Team USA Head Coach, Alex ‘Dutchy” Ghesquiere not only instructed, but brought along their cleats to play!

In 2018 AUA continued to expand Ultimate locally and helped launch a weekly co-ed Maryland High School Ultimate League through Montgomery County Recreation. Outside of summer camps and leagues, AUA organizes and runs two weeks of international clinics in Panama City, Panama each January.

AUA maintains a database of online videos and Ultimate content for people to learn about Ultimate. Whether you are new and looking for Ultimate vocabulary and gameplay, or a player/coach looking for practice drills and advanced concepts, AUA has free video content for you. In 2015, Rowan moved to Washington DC, where he currently captains both the amateur club team Truck Stop and the local professional team, the DC Breeze. Since relocating to the Nation's Capital, Rowan has helped lead the Breeze to the playoffs each year, as well as four consecutive trips to Club Nationals with Truck Stop. Darryl Stanley

As one of the few coaches to ever win a professional Ultimate championship, Darryl has successfully coached and led many Ultimate teams to significant victories since 2013.  In 2016, MLU’s Philadelphia Spinners achieved an overall record of 11-1 on their way to clinching the franchise’s first and only MLU Championship. Darryl was also the head coach of University of Pennsylvania’s men’s Ultimate team from 2014-2016, leading it to the Eastern Pennsylvania Sectional Championship victory in 2015 and 2016.

After relocating to D.C. in 2017, Darryl signed on as the head coach for the Maryland Men’s Ultimate team, the D.C. Breeze professional team, and the head coach for Truck Stop, a top-ranked club team. Under his leadership, the UMD Men’s team far exceeded expectations during his first year.  In the spring of 2018, the team managed strategic and gutsy performances while facing elimination.  With one upset after another, they defeated three (3) nationals bid earners in the Atlantic Coast Regionals to join other top-ranked college teams at nationals in Milwaukee.  Their tenacity and team spirit are a true testament to Darryl’s coaching and mentoring, as Maryland strives to become a power player in the Atlantic Coast.

Darryl has recently been recognized as a top coach by several outlets, being named a top 5 coach in the AUDL pro division in 2018. He won the 2018 Atlantic Coast Coach of the Year award for his achievements with the University of Maryland. Ultiworld has recognized him as the 1st runner up on three separate occasions for their club and college Coach of the Year awards. Most recently Darryl has been appointed by USA Ultimate as an assistant coach for the US Under-24 Men’s National Team competing in Heidelberg, Germany in July 2019.
